The Crystal Queen is only known as just that; The Crystal Queen. Nopony knows her real name besides the very oldest historians (and perhaps Celestia and Luna). They say she was a beautiful mare who found her way out of the freezing winter of the Windigoes and created a spell to change the snow into beautiful crystals. She created a beautiful empire and they say that even the Crystal ponies were made out of the snow as well (although it's likely it was just a myth). She was driven mad by her own spell, but almost everyone in the Crystal Empire forgives her for it, as she not only (possibly) created them, she gave them a beautiful home and would grant anypony's wish if asked. Of course, she always granted what she believed was best, so it wasn't always what you wanted (and often it was ornate and overcomplicated). So it was a mixed bag. She even created the Crystal Heart when the magic started to fade from her as she was dying, and made it to keep her ponies safe even in death.
